Avengers Endgame Timeline: Chronologically Explained

First things first. Let me confess.
I am a DC fan at heart. Period.
So if you are a Marvel fan, please do not mind me for saying my truth.
I do like marvel, a lot. They have achieved a huge amount of success, where DC seems too, too small player.

Maybe the dark tone shown in DC movies attracts me. The serious nature of it that started with Nolan gripped me. DC has tried to be comedic lately to attract moviegoers. Still at the core, it is a dark and serious nature of DC films that won over me. Take for example the trailer of the much anticipated  Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker film.

Marvel's been on the lighter side. It is great for the the soul to have comedic moments here and then. They have done a tremendous job in tickling our rib bones. 

But somehow, to me; Endgame kind of felt like moving to the more Darker tone of DC. I mean, it has comedic moments, but just two or three. Apart from that, Avengers Endgame is a serious and really dark movie filled with emotions, death, loss, sacrifices, reunions, heartbreak all shown in a much darker tone. Even the Andy Serkis version of 2018 Mowgli was a darker take on the story of The Jungle Book. So, maybe Marvel took an inspiration from DC.

As I typed my article few days back, Endgame had already earned $1.915 billion as per Wikipedia. It then earn $2 billion dollars and is on the league of Titanic ,Avatar, Star Wars The Force Awakens and Infinity War. Latest reports suggest it has surpassed Titanic as on 07.05.19 earning $2.194 billion! Now only Avatar remains to be conquered.

All in all, Endgame is a massive and phenomenal movie of our times. It is a big feat to converge and conclude all the plot holes of all previous 21 films into. a single grand movie. Disney and Marvel have done a tremendous job in these 11 years. A massive feat.  

All the persons involved in film-making, distribution, promotion, advertisements, literally each and every person connected to marvel has done a grand job. It was Stan Lee's last cameo. Starting from Jon Favreau to Russo Brothers, each director has contributed immense time and hard-work on this saga. And finally the moviegoers's love for Marvel has paved way for this emotional and MARVELlous journey.

So this is for those who after watching the movie would love to read a properly scaled time line as the movie forwards involving so many characters. I will try to show the chronological order as accurately as possible. Also remaining can still enjoy the timeline and give me suggestions to improve in the comments section. Those who have not yet seen the movie even after more than two weeks should stop reading any further. They should go watch the film first and then read this.

Without further delay, let us go inside Endgame, Chronologically.

Act 1.

The films opens with Clint (Hawkeye) teaching his daughter archery as his family prepares for an outdoor meal. His daughter successfully hits bulls eye. The mother calls them to eat. Clint heads back to retrieve the arrow and when he turns back towards his family, they are just gone. Vanished. That was the very  moment when Thanos snapped his fingers. 50% wiped off the universe.

Act 2.

Tony and Nebula are trapped in deep space after escaping Titan. They are trying to survive, but oxygen will run out the next day. Tony, for the last time, records an emotional message to Miss Potts. 

Act 3.

But Captain Marvel (Carol Denvers) arrives and rescues them and brings back to Earth. 
Tony is angered at Steve for not helping when he need him the most. He pulls apart his arc reactor and hand it to Steve. Tony recovers and things cool gradually. There is a hunt for Thanos. 

Act 4.

Nebula informs about Thanos's whereabouts. He is living in his Garden.

Act 5.

Thanos is now a farmer living in an unguarded planet. He is weak after his snapping.

The Avengers arrive, attack and interrogate him,. Thanos announces that he destroyed the stones to prevent their further use. Out of Anger, Thor beheads Thanos

Act 6.

Five Years gone, it is probably 2023. Our Cap is organising support groups for grieving of the lost one and urging them to move on.

Act 7.

Suddenly, Scott Lang(Ant Man) arrives back from Quantum Realm. He explore the city and finds out that 50% has vanished. Even his name is engraved on one of the pillars. He visits his now grown daughter, although he looks the same age as he was five years ago, as in Quantum Realm time travels rather fast. 



Act 8. 

Lang goes to Avengers HQ and suggests to use Quantum Realm as a method of time travel. He wants to rescue (Wasp) Hope. Now they need a brain to build a time machine.

Act 9.

They visit Tony, who is married to Pepper Pots and has a daughter, Morgan. The family is living peacefully in a home by a lake. Once Cap, Natasha and Lang arrive, Tony is reluctant to make a time machine telling them to stay for lunch if they can stop discussing about it.



Act 10.

Rejected, they go seeking help from a much bigger brain. Lang is surprised at who can be more intelligent than Tony. Now meet the all new hybrid of Hulk and Bruce Banner, who eats a lot and is a jolly guy and takes selfie shots with fans. He is now Mr.Hulk!

Act 11.

Nat finds Hawkeye (Clint) in Japan, where he has become a vigilante. She convinces him to return.

Act 12.

Back at HQ, they start doing tests to prepare a portal (Quantum Realm) with Hulk's help. They try sending Scott back, but each time he appears, he is either a kid, baby, old man! So, after lot of arguments, Clint volunteers to be test subject. He travels back in time to his family and is able to know that they can bring people back.

Act 13.

Simultaneously, at Night, after bidding Morgan a goodnight kiss, Tony is successful in a time travel simulation. Talking to pepper about what he can choose and not choose, he finally heads to avengers HQ and returns Cap's shield to him. Gradually, the surviving members arrive at the HQ.

Act 14.

Hulk and Rocket goes to New Asgard in Norway to find a Fat Thor and convenes him to return.  All assembled, they try to find the years in the past, about locations of the infinity stones.

Act 15.

They from three teams and travel in the past to get the stones. Lang terms the mission as Time Heist. 

Act 16. 

In 2012,Hulk convinces the ancient one to give the time stone after telling her that Doctor Strange choose to give away the stone. The ancient One finds reason behind his this 1 in a 14 million possibilities. 

Cap fights his own past 2012 Cap, but successfully retrieves the  mind stone from the sceptre. He even whispers "Hail Hydra" inside a lift!

While Hydra (then SHIELD) arrives at Stark Tower, Loki steals the tesseract containing the space stone before Atman and Iron Man can retrieve them. They have limited Pym particles to jump to present. 

In-spite of this, desperate, Ironman and Cap goes back to 1970s SHIELD HQ to retire an older space stone. Tony meets his father Howard while Cap is able to steal the Pym particle vials from Dr. Pym’s lab. Tony encourages Howard that he will be a great father and somehow Howard fells that he knows Tony from somewhere. Howard bids Tony goodbye  leaves in his car.

They are chased when Cap sees Peggy Carter in her younger version. He silently watches her standing behind a window without uttering a word. and then Peggy unknown of Steve's presence leaves the room. 

Act 17.

Rocket and Thor travels to Asgard in 2013, to steal the Reality stone from Jane. Thor meets his mother, who knows he is from her future. They connect and talk their sorrows. Rocket arrives stealing the stone from Jane and Thor too steals the Mjolnir before leaving Asgard.

Act 18.

Clint and Nat go to Vormir in 2014, where Red skull asks them for a sacrifice, A soul for a soul. Clint and Nat fight to prevent each other from committing suicide, but finally scarlet pays the price and Clint retrieves the soul stone. 

War Machine (Rhodes) and Nebula travel to Morag in 2014, where they subdues the past Starlord (Peter Quill). They are able to retrieve the Power Stone.

During this time, Past Thanos is shown discussing his plans with Gamora and Nebula. As Nebula is part robot, they are able to see the future Nebula. Thanos is appalled to see his success for wiping half the world but that also Thor beheads him. He says it is his destiny. They plan to capture Nebula.

Back in Morag, only Rhodes is able to return. Nebula is captured by the past Nebula. She is interrogated by Thanos. Past nebula returns to the present. 

Act 19.

Back in the present, Avengers returns and mourns Scarlet’s sacrifice.  To honour her memory, they vow to do anything to get all 50 % back. They build a new gauntlet and put all the stones together on it.

Act 20.

Thor claims to do the snap as he is the mightiest avenger, but he is prevented by Tony and Chris as he is in no state to perform snap. Finally Hulk volunteers to do the snap since he is also nearly indestructible like Thanos. That means he won’t die after snap, only injured, while humans will easily die.

The Gauntlet inflicts Hulk immense pain, but he is successful in doing the snap.

At the same time, past nebula opens the portal to allow Thanos and his ship to enter the present.

Act 21.

Thanos attacks them all blazing and blasting everything on them. The whole HQ is in rumbles. Thanos realizes that his 50% rule is useless as they can bring all back. He tells Thor, Tony and Cap that he will wipe 100% off the universe and start from scratch. That way no one will be alive to remember his deeds. Only new beings will be born who will be grateful to him. 

Act 22.

He overpowers all the three after a momentous fight. Thanos's whole army portals to the present.

Defeat is nearby when the lost 50% emerge from portals. Black Panther, Spiderman, Doctor strange,  Guardians of galaxy, Scarlet witch (Wanda), Bucky and Wasp. 

Both the sides engage is a major war like fight, like that of the drones shots from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. And it is here that Cap finally becomes worthy of Mjolinr. He swings it hard on Thanos. Thor is elated at Cap's worthiness. This was a grand moment in the movie.

Wanda in her revenge mood for killing Vision, attacks Thanos viciously. Spiderman is reunited with Tony and they hug.

Hawkeyes takes with him gauntlet from the rubbles. He is chased by Thanos’s bidders. 

Thanos tries to get hold of it. Clint throws gauntlet to Black Panther and he to Spiderman who clings to Valkyrie and pass on to Captain Marvel. 

Then, the grand assemble happens: All the Lady warriors assembles together; Pepper, Nebula, Okoye, Wanda, Mantis, Shuri, Valkyrie, all, led by Captain Marvel.  And they fight to safely take the gauntlet though Thanos's massive army. This is a hint at a possible all- female-Avengers-movie-led-by-Captain Marvel. 

Wasp and Antman prepare to active their Minivan time machine but Thanos destroys it. He and Captain Marvel engages in a gauntlet snatching game. Thanos pulls the Power Stone from the gauntlet to overpower Carol.

At that moment Doctor strange signals by revealing the one possible victory reality he saw in his vision to Tony.  Tony realises it and grabs Thanos hand at this weak moment, but is quickly thrown out by Thanos.

Thanos says, "I am Inevitable." He finally does the snap to wipe 100%. But nothing happens. 

Tony reveals that he has snatched the stones from Thanos. In pain, Tony replies Thanos,  “and…I … am……..iron Man”. He snaps his fingers and BOOM! 

Act 23.

Thanos's army is wiped out. Thanos sadly sits and is gradually wiped out too. 

Tony lays on his back calmly. Peter Parker tries to console him and urge him to be strong. He does not speak.

Pepper reaches Tony and consoles him saying, "We are going to be okay. You can finally rest now." Tony's arc reactor goes off and he dies. 

Act 24.

The world returns to normal.  They all attend Tony’s funeral at his lake house. Pepper puts the arch reactor that she had engraved “Proof that Tony Stark has a Heart” on the water and floats it away. 

The camera moves in a slow and beautiful manner in this moment of sadness through the entire mourning team . It starts with Peppper and Morgan, Harold, further to Cap and Thor, then Hulk, Bucky, Clint, Rhodes, Peter Parker, Aunt May, Doctor Strange, Lang and his family, Black Panther and team, Guardians of the Galaxy, Harley the kid, Ross, Maria Hill, Carol and lastly Nick Fury. This was another dark tone in the movie. 

Act 25.

Days pass by, people move on. 

Thor gives his crown to Valkyrie and joins the Guardians of Galaxy. Starlord resents Thor as they yearn for the captain-ship position in the spaceship. Thor jokingly says to Quill ’Yes, of course, you are the captain.....” and gives a threatening grin. 

Black Panther returns to Wakanda with his team celebrating victory. Lang stays with his family happily. Clint returns home to find his wife and children. They reunite.

Act 26.

Everyone was celebrating victory , but underlying all of it there was immense loss. A victory that demanded  a huge price. A price that cannot be undone. Natasha Romanoff and Tony stark gave up their lives. 

Act 27.

Cap decides to return the infinity stones at their correct places in time. Hulk, Sam, Bucky and Cap prepare the quantum tunnel (the portal).

Bucky says to Cap, “I am gonna miss you.”

Hulk instructs Cap to be ready. At present he will just go for 5 seconds, but inside the time travel, he can spend a long time. He counts back from five to one, but Cap does not return! 

Hulk and Sam panic trying to bring him back. Bucky knew caps intentions.

At a distance, they see an old Steve with white hair and wrinkled facial skin. Sam goes near him. Steve gifts the shield to Sam. Sam asks if Cap can explain his plans to return to the past. He says he will not tell him. He wish to keep it that way.

The film pulls back to 1940s suburb America. There is a soothing musical song inside a home. Through its window, a young Steve is shown dancing with Peggy, that very dance which was a long overdue promise from the first Cap film before he went into the ice.

The movie ends with Cap dancing slowly with Peggy to the tunes of Harry James and his orchestra's melody "It's been a long, long time."

So finally, Steve is given the love he deserves after such a long, long time.
